European Christmas markets 2026: which to choose for your route, and where to sleep and eat in each city

THE ESSENTIALS

  • A Christmas market is not chosen for the tree but for what surrounds it: the hotel, the table and how many days you have. Five cities solve five different trips: Vienna, Salzburg, Strasbourg, Prague and Budapest.
  • 2026 dates confirmed at an official source: Strasbourg from 27 November to 24 December, and Prague from 28 November to 6 January. Those for Vienna, Salzburg and Budapest come from secondary sources, and I mark it in each.
  • If you travel this December, today is the last reasonable moment to book hotels. The dates from the 20th to the 24th fill first.
  • Mexicans enter visa-free. The ETIAS permit still has no confirmed start date, so it does not affect a trip this December.

There is a kind of trip that is enjoyed more in the head than in the queue for a mulled wine stall. This is what I would do so it is not that one.

First decide how much time you have

One market is not enough for a trip, and each city has its own. With four or five nights, choose one city or two close ones. With seven or eight, three. With ten, four, but no more: it is the same principle as how many cities fit in one trip. Fewer bases, more time in each.

The dates, with their source

Vienna: pastry shops and concert halls

It is the most orderly. The markets are spread across the city, so you can walk them without queues: the one at City Hall square, with the ice rink around it, the one at Schönbrunn and the one at Stephansplatz.

Where to sleep. The MICHELIN Guide gives Three Keys to Hotel Sacher Wien, the hotel where the Sacher torte was born. With two Keys there are five in Vienna: Hotel Imperial, Hotel Sans Souci Wien, Park Hyatt Vienna, Rosewood Vienna and The Amauris Vienna. The guide groups them in two types: historic luxury houses, like the Sacher, the Sans Souci, the Imperial and the Rosewood, and newer hotels, like the Josefine, the Buxbaum or the Motto.

Where to eat. In the 2026 guide, Steirereck im Stadtpark has three stars, and Konstantin Filippou and Mraz & Sohn, two, according to Falstaff and the MICHELIN list. Vienna has 18 starred restaurants, adding up to 26 stars.

What to do. Between markets, the city is walked by neighbourhood. Book the starred table before the hotel: it is the first thing to fill at Christmas.

Salzburg: the small one, with mountains

Smaller than Vienna and more intimate: one market in the cathedral square, within walking distance of everything. Its calendar has a curiosity: on 5 December there is the Krampus run, St. Nicholas's devilish companion, and on the 21st a Perchten one, according to the tourism portal. It is not for anyone looking for something quiet.

Hohensalzburg Fortress, above Salzburg.

Where to sleep. Schloss Mönchstein has two Keys. Hotel Goldener Hirsch and Hotel Sacher Salzburg have one. Half an hour away, in Hof bei Salzburg, Rosewood Schloss Fuschl, a 15th-century castle turned lakeside resort, received Three Keys after two years of renovation, according to the guide itself.

Where to eat. Salzburg has 13 starred restaurants. Ikarus, at Hangar-7, has two, according to SalzburgerLand.

Strasbourg: the one with tradition

It is the one with the most history. The city's market has existed since 1570, according to the official site, and the city presents itself as the Christmas capital of France. There is a giant tree and an Advent wreath in the City Hall courtyard.

Petite France, Strasbourg's half-timbered quarter.

Where to sleep. Les Haras has one MICHELIN Key. Outside the city, in Alsace, are Villa René Lalique, with one Key, and La Cheneaudière, with two, according to the France selection.

Where to eat. Au Crocodile, by chef Romain Brillat, has one star. 1741, de:ja and Umami do too, and Les Funambules recently earned its own. The historic Buerehiesel, which had a star, no longer appears in the latest selection.

Prague: the one that lasts longest

It has the longest dates, and so it is the best to travel after Christmas. The one at Old Town Square is the largest and carries a tree brought each year from a different region of the country. The one at Wenceslas Square sits in front of the National Museum.

Prague Castle and Malá Strana, seen from the Vltava.

Where to sleep. The guide gives a Key to several Prague hotels: Four Seasons Hotel Prague, Augustine, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Almanac X Alcron, The Julius, BoHo Prague and Andaz. Fairmont Golden Prague has two.

Where to eat. Czechia has one two-star restaurant, Papilio. Among the one-star ones are La Degustation Bohême Bourgeoise and Field; the full list is eight, and I could not confirm the rest.

Budapest: the one on the river

It is the one that combines a market with thermal baths, and the best value for luxury on the list.

Where to sleep. Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace, with two Keys in 2025 and 2026. It has 179 rooms, according to the MICHELIN listing, in a 1906 Art Nouveau building, on the Pest side, next to the Chain Bridge, with a view of Buda Castle. Matild Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel also has two Keys, and Párisi Udvar Hotel one, according to the Hungary selection.

Where to eat. Stand has two stars. Borkonyha, Costes, Babel, Rumour and Salt had one in the 2025 guide.

What I am asked most

01

Which is the best Christmas market in Europe?

It depends on your route: Vienna to be comfortable, Strasbourg for tradition, Prague for the long dates and Salzburg for intimacy.

02

When is the best time to go?

From 27 November onward all of them are open. The first days of December are quieter than the week of the 20th to the 24th.

03

Do I need a visa?

No, for up to 90 days. ETIAS still has no date.

04

How many days do I need?

Four nights for one city, seven for three.

How we would build it

Tell me how many days you have and from which date, and I will propose a city and a hotel. This is how we build a tailor-made trip, starting with the first call, which costs nothing. If you already have dates, tell us when you can travel.
