Luxury Madrid: where to sleep, where to eat and what to do (and when not to go)

THE SHORT VERSION

  • Madrid is chosen by hotel zone: the Art Walk, with the Mandarin Oriental Ritz (three MICHELIN Keys); Puerta del Sol, with the Four Seasons (two); or the Salamanca district, with the Rosewood Villa Magna (two).
  • It has 31 MICHELIN-starred restaurants, but only one with three, DiverXO. Six have two.
  • Four things worth the trip: the Art Walk, the Corral de la Morería, Casa Botín and Toledo in a day.
  • Avoid August: in 2025 the Retiro hit 40.3 °C. And learn the clock: lunch at 2, dinner at 9.

You arrive at seven thirty at night at a restaurant in Madrid, hungry and with a reservation. The dining room is empty. Nobody told you that in Madrid you eat dinner at nine.

That is Madrid's first lesson, and everything else depends on it. It is a city you enjoy a lot, but on its own schedule.

First, the clock

Lunch is between half past one and half past three, and dinner starts around half past eight; the normal time to sit down is between nine and half past ten at night, and later on weekends. A reservation at 14:00 and another at 21:00 surprise nobody. At the good ones, it is worth booking.

And a second habit: many restaurants close one or two days a week, and several close for a few weeks in August. Before you touch the city, call.

Where to sleep

According to Madrid's tourism portal, the 2026 MICHELIN Guide gives Keys to thirteen hotels in the city. The three that matter are in different zones, so choosing is choosing where you want to wake up.

Mandarin Oriental Ritz, three Keys. It is on the Art Walk, in a Belle Époque building, a few steps from the Prado and the Thyssen. It is the only hotel in Madrid with three Keys. If you are coming for the museums, this is the one.

Four Seasons Hotel Madrid, two Keys. It is the chain's first hotel in Madrid and occupies the Canalejas complex, near Puerta del Sol. It is in the middle of everything, on the edge of the old city.

Rosewood Villa Magna, two Keys. It is in the Salamanca district, the one with the luxury shops. I would say it is the calmest of the three.

If you prefer something smaller, the same list gives one Key to Santo Mauro, Gran Hotel Inglés, Heritage Madrid and Brach Madrid, among others.

Where to eat

Madrid has 31 starred restaurants in the 2026 selection of the MICHELIN Guide Spain. Only one, DiverXO, has three. Six have two: Coque, Deessa, DSTAgE, Paco Roncero, Smoked Room and Ramón Freixa Atelier, which debuted straight away with two stars. The other twenty-four have one, among them Gaytán, Saddle, Desde 1911 and Sen Omakase.

Of the top ones, two names to know what to expect. DiverXO, by David Muñoz, is avant-garde cooking, the kind you do not improvise. Coque, on Calle Marqués del Riscal, belongs to a family: Mario Sandoval in the kitchen, Juan Diego in the dining room and Rafael in the cellar.

And there are two tables like no others.

Corral de la Morería Gastronómico. It is the restaurant of the city's most famous flamenco tablao: a four-table dining room, run by chef David García, with one MICHELIN star. You can have dinner there on its own, or with the show.

Casa Botín. It has no star, but it opened in 1725 and the Guinness Book of Records recognizes it as the oldest restaurant in the world. You go for the history, and it is worth booking.

What to do

The Art Walk. The Prado, the Reina Sofía and the Thyssen are a few minutes' walk from one another. The Prado is open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 20:00 and on Sundays until 19:00. The Reina Sofía, home of Guernica, closes on Tuesdays. The Thyssen opens on Mondays only from 12:00 to 16:00. The Paseo del Prado and the Retiro have been a World Heritage site since July 2021. It is one of those plans that does need order: pick two museums, not three.

Flamenco at the Corral de la Morería. The tablao has existed since 1956. It does not admit children under seven, and weekends and key dates sell out weeks ahead. If you want to go, book the show first and then the rest of the week.

El Rastro. It is the Sunday and holiday flea market, from nine to three in the afternoon, on Calle Ribera de Curtidores. Go at nine: until about half past ten you can walk calmly, and after that you cannot. It is a morning plan, and the best part is that it ends just in time for lunch at two.

The Royal Palace. It covers about 135,000 square meters and is, according to several guides, the largest in Western Europe. Set aside two hours.

A night at the opera. The Teatro Real opened its 2026-27 season with Manon Lescaut and continues with The Marriage of Figaro, from 10 to 27 November, and Simon Boccanegra, from 16 December to 9 January. The dates are worth confirming on the theater's website before buying tickets.

Toledo in a day. The Avant train leaves from Atocha and takes about 33 minutes. The city has been a World Heritage site since 1986, and you walk it on foot. Leave early and come back on the afternoon train.

When to go, and when not to

Avoid August. In 2025, the Retiro hit 40.3 °C on 17 August, and in 2024 the average of the region's highs was 34.5 °C. On top of that, add the restaurants that close for whole weeks. If you have no choice, plan air-conditioned museums and late dinners.

And if you land at year-end: the Thyssen closes at three in the afternoon on 24 and 31 December, and is closed on 25 December and 1 January.

How I would plan three nights

The first day, the Art Walk in the morning and just one museum; lunch at two and dinner at half past nine. The second, the Royal Palace, the Retiro and flamenco at night. The third, Toledo. It is a compact trip and it works because almost everything is done on foot.

How much it costs

My fees are calculated per person and depend on the destination, the days and how much logistics the trip takes. Trips start at around 4,000 dollars per person, double occupancy and in four- and five-star hotels, without international flights: I work airport to airport. Upward there is no fixed ceiling.

What people ask me most

01

What time is dinner in Madrid?

Between nine and half past ten at night, and later on weekends.

It depends on what you want nearby. The Mandarin Oriental Ritz, for the museums; the Four Seasons, for the center; the Rosewood Villa Magna, for calm.

03

How many MICHELIN stars does Madrid have?

Thirty-one starred restaurants in the 2026 selection: one with three, six with two and twenty-four with one.

04

When is it best not to go to Madrid?

In August, because of the heat and the restaurants that close.

How we plan it

The first thing I ask you is how many nights you have and whether it is your first time in Madrid. If it is, three nights are enough. If not, we have to decide what you have already seen and what you have not.

That is how we build a tailored trip, and it is what the first call is about, which costs nothing. If you already have dates, tell us where to.
