THE SHORT VERSION
- Nobody knows yet when the cherry trees will bloom in 2027. Private forecasts start in December and are revised every week or two. Your booking has to come first.
- The reasonable window for Tokyo and Kyoto is late March to early April. It is an average, not a promise.
- Since 1 March 2026, Kyoto charges up to 10,000 yen per person per night in the most expensive rooms.
- Golden Week 2027 starts on Thursday 29 April. Choose cherry blossoms or Golden Week, not both.
Every October I get asked the same thing: "Can I book the cherry blossoms already?" Yes, you can. What you cannot do is know the exact week, because the trees do not read calendars.
Why there is no safe date
In 2026 the cherry trees in Tokyo opened on 19 March and reached full bloom on the 28th. Those in Kyoto, on the 23rd and the 30th. Some years everything comes early and some years late. Thirty-year averages put Kyoto's full bloom around 4 April, and for Tokyo the sources disagree: between 31 March and 3 April.
My advice is to book with flexible dates and, when the forecast comes out in December, adjust. For that, the booking needs to be movable.
Where to sleep in Kyoto
The MICHELIN Guide gives Keys to 22 hotels in the city. I split them into three groups.
Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto, three Keys. It is the only one in the city with three. It sits next to Nijo Castle, a World Heritage site.
Aman Kyoto and The Shinmonzen, two Keys. The first is surrounded by forest and gardens. The second is in the heart of Gion, and its design evokes a machiya, the traditional wooden townhouse.
One Key. Hoshinoya Kyoto, Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto, The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto, Park Hyatt Kyoto, Six Senses Kyoto and Hiiragiya, among others. There is something for every style.
Where to eat
Kyoto has six three-MICHELIN-star restaurants in the 2026 edition, presented on 23 April. The most recent to join is Miyamaso, the restaurant of a ryokan in the Kitayama area, which rose from two stars to three and also holds a Green Star. In all, the city has 19 restaurants with two stars and 73 with one.
If you want to dine at one of them, the reservation comes before the flight.
The tax that has already changed
Since 1 March 2026, Kyoto charges its accommodation tax according to the room price, per person per night: 1,000 yen from 20,000 to 49,999; 4,000 from 50,000 to 99,999; and 10,000 above 100,000. For a couple in a top-tier room, that is 20,000 yen per night, added to the bill.
It does not change the decision, but it does change the budget, and you should know before you book.
Golden Week
In 2027 the public holidays are Thursday 29 April and Monday 3 to Wednesday 5 May. If you take Friday 30 off, you have a full week, and all of Japan travels with you. A hotel that already cost a lot in March costs more that week, and the temples fill up. My rule: cherry blossoms or Golden Week, not both.
Why it pays to decide early
Japan received 42.68 million foreign visitors in 2025, 15.8 % more than in 2024 and, for the first time, more than 40 million. Kyoto is where it shows most.
How I would plan eight nights
Three in Tokyo, four in Kyoto with a big dinner booked from the start, and one night in a ryokan outside the city. Train transfers go with you and the luggage goes separately. It can be done without rushing.
How much it costs
My fees are calculated per person and depend on the destination, the days and how much logistics the trip takes. Trips start at around 4,000 dollars per person, double occupancy and in four- and five-star hotels, without international flights: I work airport to airport. Upward there is no fixed ceiling.
What people ask me most
When do the cherry blossoms bloom in Kyoto?
Around late March and early April. The forecast arrives from December.
When should I book?
In October or November, with flexible dates.
What is the best hotel in Kyoto?
Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto is the only one with three MICHELIN Keys.
What is Golden Week?
The holiday week of late April and early May, when all of Japan travels.
How we plan it
The first thing I ask is how many nights you have and how flexible your dates are. With that we decide how many cities fit and which hotel to lock in first.
That is how we build a tailored trip, and it is what the first call is about, which costs nothing. If you already have dates, tell us where to.
