THE SHORT VERSION
- Holy Week 2027 falls early: Easter is 28 March and the school break runs from 22 March to 2 April, twelve days in all.
- What sells out first is not the big hotel. It is whatever has few places: one house in a twelve-house hotel, a tasting-menu table, a spot to see the cherry blossoms.
- Three trips depending on how many days you have: four or five nights on the Nayarit coast, eight to ten in Portugal, twelve in Japan.
- Someone traveling alone pays more for the room, and a large group gets rates but loses the small hotels.
Imagine it is January. You have the break dates, the group decided and a hotel in mind: one with twelve houses. You ask about the week of 22 March. It is the same question anyone with those dates asks, and everything else depends on the answer.
That is why this article does not start with the destination. It starts with the order: what gets booked first, and what can wait.
What is already known about 2027
Easter 2027 is Sunday 28 March. Holy Thursday falls on the 25th and Good Friday on the 26th. The SEP school calendar for the 2026-2027 cycle sets the Holy Week break from 22 March to 2 April, and classes end on 9 July. With the weekends on either side, that makes sixteen days between Saturday 20 March and Sunday 4 April. Some states adjust their dates, so it is worth confirming your own state's calendar.
It is an early break and not a long one. That matters, because a month's demand gets compressed into fewer days.
What the last two years left behind
In 2025, Mexico's tourism secretariat projected for the 12 to 26 April break a hotel occupancy of 88.3% in Nuevo Nayarit, the new name for Nuevo Vallarta, the highest of the five it reported. Behind it came the Riviera Maya at 87.1%, Cancún at 84.0%, Los Cabos at 83.2% and Puerto Vallarta at 82.7%. At the close, Sectur counted 14.9 million tourists nationwide, 2.7% more than in 2024.
In 2026 something else moved. According to Despegar, demand for trips abroad during Holy Week grew 22%, and the destinations that rose most were Tokyo (138%), Panama (128%), Punta Cana (55%), Madrid (52%) and Paris (49%).
Tokyo's case is no coincidence. The Japan Meteorological Corporation published its first blossom forecast on 18 December 2025: peak cherry blossoms in Tokyo on 26 March and in Kyoto on 31 March. Eleven days later it adjusted them to 28 March and 1 April. Those dates fell right at the start of the 2026 break, which began in late March.
Our read: in 2027 the break starts roughly a week earlier than in 2026, but the blossoms usually fall in those same weeks. There is no 2027 forecast yet. The 2026 one came out three months before the peak, and by then you should already have resolved what cannot be resolved in three months.
What sells out first
It is not what it seems. Large hotels absorb demand; small ones do not.
- The houses of a small hotel. Imanta has twelve units in total. A boutique hotel of seven or eight rooms is the hardest case for a group: if it is not done with plenty of lead time, there is no way to get them.
- The tables that are the reason for the trip. The tasting menu at Rubra, or Kyoto's three-star restaurants, do not stretch: they have the tables they have.
- Experiences with an official limit. When Playa del Amor in the Marietas Islands reopened, the authority set a maximum of 116 visitors a day. It does not expand with budget.
Three trips depending on your days
Four or five nights: the Nayarit coast. If you only have the short week, the Nayarit coast is the most logical option. Puerto Vallarta airport is about 45 minutes from Imanta, and an hour from One&Only Mandarina. What you need to know is that the area fills up: the Nuevo Vallarta zone, renamed Nuevo Nayarit, projected 88.3% occupancy in 2025.
To get away from that number, the advice is to go farther north. Imanta has twelve units on 250 acres and has been a Relais & Châteaux member since 2013. Mandarina, with 105 villas and three MICHELIN Keys, hosts polo matches almost every weekend between November and March. For the table, Carao, by Enrique Olvera, or Rubra, by Daniela Soto-Innes at W Punta de Mita. The whales end their season around the end of March: the 2025-2026 one ended on the 23rd, and the dates for the next are published in autumn. You will find the full detail in our article on luxury Riviera Nayarit.
Eight to ten nights: Portugal. It is the trip for people who want Europe without going in through the usual door. The MICHELIN Guide gives two Keys to Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon and three to Penha Longa Resort, in Sintra, the only hotel inside the Sintra-Cascais natural reserve, with a 14th-century monastery. In Chiado, a few meters from each other, are Alma, by Henrique Sá Pessoa, and Belcanto, by José Avillez, each with two MICHELIN stars.
The third act is the Alentejo, and there the hotel is the reason for the trip: Torre de Palma Wine Hotel, in Monforte, with two Keys, or São Lourenço do Barrocal, in Monsaraz, with one. A reasonable split of nine nights: three in Lisbon, two in Sintra and four in the Alentejo. It is an opinion, not a rule.
Twelve nights: Japan with cherry blossoms. It is the trip that bends most toward the calendar, and the one most worth settling quickly. In Kyoto, the 2026 MICHELIN Guide gives three Keys to Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto, the only one in that category in the city, and two to Aman Kyoto and Capella Kyoto, which enters for the first time. In Tokyo, three Keys go to Palace Hotel Tokyo, Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi and Bvlgari Hotel Tokyo.
At the table, Kyoto now has six three-star restaurants. The most recent is Miyamaso, a ryokan that cooks with mountain vegetables the chef gathers himself.
There are two warnings. The first is cost: since March 2026, Kyoto charges an accommodation tax of up to 10,000 yen per person per night in hotels that cost over 100,000. The second is the calendar. In 2026, Tokyo's peak moved two days within a few weeks of the first forecast, and Kyoto's one. Waiting for the forecast to sharpen before booking is how you end up without a hotel.
Who you travel with changes the trip
Alone. It costs more for a simple reason: the room is not shared. On safaris and cruises the price is per person, but per room, so someone traveling alone pays as two people.
In a large group. With fifteen people it is easier to get group rates and transport is more affordable. In exchange, you lose the small, private, exclusive boutique hotel. Getting seven or eight rooms in a hotel like that is complicated if it is not done in time.
How much it costs
Fees are calculated per person and depend on the destination, the days and how much logistics the trip requires. Trips start at around 4,000 dollars per person, double occupancy and in four- and five-star hotels, and have no fixed ceiling: they depend on the destination, the days, the category and the number of travelers. They do not include international flights: we work airport to airport, from the moment you arrive until you leave.
What we get asked most
When is Holy Week in 2027?
Easter is Sunday 28 March. Holy Thursday is the 25th and Good Friday the 26th.
When is the SEP Holy Week school break in 2027?
From 22 March to 2 April 2027, according to the 2026-2027 school calendar.
How far ahead should you book?
It depends on what you book. A small hotel, a tasting-menu table or a spot with an official limit asks for months. A four-hundred-room hotel, much less.
How much does a tailored trip cost?
From around 4,000 dollars per person, double occupancy and without international flights. Upward there is no fixed ceiling.
How we would plan it
We would start with three facts: how many nights you have, how many people are traveling and what cannot be missing. That decides what gets booked first. It tends to be the table, the quota or the small house before the flight.
That is how we build a tailored trip, and it is what the first call is about, which costs nothing. If you already have your dates, tell us where to.
