THE SHORT VERSION
- Riviera Nayarit is not one hotel: it is three kinds of trip, the beach enclave, the private jungle and the large resort. Choosing the wrong kind matters more than choosing the wrong hotel.
- Four hotels in the area hold MICHELIN Keys: One&Only Mandarina (three), Four Seasons Punta Mita and Susurros del Corazón (two) and St. Regis Punta Mita (one).
- Whales, the Marietas Islands, polo and golf run on quotas and calendars, not on budget.
- For a wedding, count the hotel's rooms first and the ballrooms second.
You leave Puerto Vallarta airport with three transfer offers and one detail nobody explained: the airport is in Jalisco, your hotel is in Nayarit and the drive, depending on which one, takes anywhere from forty-five minutes to more than an hour. You booked "Vallarta" and you still do not know which part of the coast you will wake up on.
It is the most common confusion about Riviera Nayarit, and an expensive one. Because the area does not offer a single luxury trip. It offers several, very different from one another, and almost all of them show up in search results under the same name.
Where it is and why the map matters
Riviera Nayarit is the stretch of Nayarit's coast that starts at Banderas Bay and runs north: Nuevo Vallarta, Punta Mita, Sayulita and beyond. The airport that serves it is Puerto Vallarta's. Imanta, for example, is 45 minutes north of that terminal, ten from Punta de Mita and fifteen from Sayulita. One&Only Mandarina is an hour north of Vallarta, according to the MICHELIN Guide.
It is no secret. In March 2026, Nayarit's tourism secretary said the state had closed 2025 with 82% hotel occupancy and about 10 million visitors. What changes the trip is not whether the area is full, but which part of it you sleep in.
Three trips with the same name
The beach enclave: Punta Mita. It is a gated development at the tip of the bay, with several of the big names. The MICHELIN Guide, in its 2025 selection, gave two Keys to Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita and to Susurros del Corazón, part of the Auberge collection, and one to St. Regis Punta Mita, which has 120 rooms on 22 hectares of oceanfront gardens. Susurros adds houses of up to seven bedrooms, a Mediterranean restaurant called Elio and a spa of more than 2,000 square meters. In the same area is W Punta de Mita, where Rubra opened, a restaurant we cover below.
Here luxury is convenience: you go from room to beach, spa and golf course without getting into a car. Anyone who wants that will find it. Anyone who wants to feel far from everything will not.
The jungle and the silence: Imanta and Mandarina. Imanta is one of the smallest hotels in the area: twelve units on 250 acres, among them ten casas of between 176 and 232 square meters, according to the hotel. It has been a Relais & Châteaux member since 2013, has a temazcal, an ice bath and a turtle release program that, according to the hotel, frees about 5,000 hatchlings a year.
One&Only Mandarina is the other end of the same idea, at a larger scale: 105 villas between the jungle and the cliffs, each with its own private plunge pool. It holds three MICHELIN Keys and ranks 23rd on The 50 Best Hotels 2026 list.
The large resort: Nuevo Vallarta. If three generations are traveling, or the group is larger than twenty, the 267 suites and the space for up to 600 guests at Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit solve what a twelve-house hotel cannot. It is a different thing, with different logistics, and there is nothing embarrassing about choosing it. Our read: the bigger the group, the less privacy matters and the more it matters that nobody has to coordinate anything.
Experiences you book by calendar, not by money
The most sought-after things in the area have rules, and the rules decide.
Humpback whales. In the 2025-2026 season, Semarnat, Mexico's environment ministry, set whale watching in Banderas Bay from 8 December 2025 to 23 March 2026, with two zones where watching is prohibited: a 1.5-kilometer radius around the Marietas Islands and a 2-kilometer coastal strip between Punta Mita and the mouth of the Ameca River. The dates for each year are published in autumn, and it is worth booking an authorized boat. Susurros del Corazón lists whale watching among the experiences it offers.
Marietas Islands and Hidden Beach. It is a national park and a Ramsar site. The authority reopened access to the hidden beach, which can only be entered at low tide, in August 2016, after closing it because of damage from overcrowding. Since then it has set a maximum of 116 visitors a day, in groups of up to 15 people with 30 minutes to enter and leave, always with an authorized service provider. Those are the conditions published at the reopening; we confirm the current ones before booking.
Polo. The Mandarina Polo & Equestrian Club offers lessons of about an hour for people aged 7 to 70 and holds matches almost every weekend between November and March, on a ten-acre field with more than 50 horses.
Golf. The Punta Mita development has two Jack Nicklaus courses. On the Pacifico, the optional hole 3, "the Tail of the Whale," is a par 3 with a natural island green that can only be played at low tide.
Temazcal. Imanta offers the pre-Hispanic ritual as part of its spa, along with yoga, sound therapy and reiki.
Tables worth the drive
Carao, at One&Only Mandarina. It is the restaurant of Enrique Olvera, the chef behind Pujol, and it was conceived as a Pacific-coast palapa. On the menu: horse mackerel ceviche, grilled sweet shrimp with ginger salsa macha and aged whole fish zarandeado-style. Mandarina also has Allora, an Italian restaurant on the beach.
Rubra, at W Punta de Mita. It opened in December 2024 under Daniela Soto-Innes, with an almost entirely female team. It has a tasting menu of nine to ten courses and its own garden of tropical fruit and Mexican medicinal herbs that the chef spent more than two years growing before opening.
Hector's Kitchen, at Kupuri Beach Club. Contemporary Mexican cooking from chef Héctor Leyva, with a view of Litibú Bay. A practical detail nobody mentions: to enter Punta Mita you have to show official photo ID at the gatehouse, and it is worth arriving half an hour before your reservation.
Elio, at Susurros del Corazón. Mediterranean-inspired coastal cooking, in a hotel that also has La Boquita for something more relaxed: tacos, ceviches and agave cocktails.
Weddings: count the rooms before the ballrooms
Riviera Nayarit promotes itself as a wedding destination, and the supply backs it up. Four Seasons Punta Mita has event space for up to 200 guests, according to the area's tourism promotion board. Susurros del Corazón lists in its fact sheet an indoor space and an outdoor one for 250 people, plus La Playa, a stretch of sand for ceremonies. Mandarina lists five spaces, among them a jetty, a beach club, terraces over the cliff and a ballroom with a courtyard. Grand Velas, with room for 600, is the largest in scale.
But the ballroom is not the limit. A twelve-house hotel like Imanta or a 105-villa one like Mandarina fills up with a mid-sized wedding, and that is where the real questions begin: whether you buy out the whole hotel, how many guests end up outside it, what happens to whoever booked before you.
Three decisions worth making before choosing a date:
- The calendar. The eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from 15 May to 30 November. The whale and polo season falls almost entirely outside it, so the best dates are also the most requested.
- The legal side. The area's tourism promotion board publishes a list of requirements for civil weddings of foreigners: passports, translated records, blood tests and witnesses. For Mexican couples, we define the paperwork with the venue before invitations go out, and that decides which part is legal and which is symbolic.
- The guest count. A large group means a large resort. An intimate ceremony means a small hotel. The opposite rarely works.
What we get asked most
Which airport do you fly into?
Puerto Vallarta's, in Jalisco. From there it is between forty-five minutes and more than an hour to the Riviera Nayarit hotels, depending on which one.
What is the best luxury hotel in the area?
It depends on the trip. For silence and privacy, Imanta or Mandarina. For an enclave with several beach, golf and restaurant options, Punta Mita. For a large group, Grand Velas.
When can you see the whales?
Between December and March. The 2025-2026 season ran from 8 December to 23 March, and each year Semarnat publishes the dates.
Can you visit Hidden Beach in the Marietas Islands?
Yes, with an authorized operator and within a quota of 116 visitors a day, at low tide.
How we would plan it
We would start with a question that seems secondary: how much of your trip do you want to spend inside the hotel? Someone who says "most of it" is usually better off at Imanta or in a house at Susurros. Someone who says "little" usually needs Punta Mita, with golf, tables and beach minutes away.
And for seven nights, a combination that works: four in a jungle hotel, Imanta or Mandarina, to do nothing on purpose, and three in Punta Mita, for the golf, a dinner at Rubra or Hector's Kitchen and the outing to the Marietas Islands. The transfer between one area and the other is under an hour, and that half of the trip has movement without the other losing its silence. If the trip falls between December and March, the whales fit into the plan without changing anything else.
What does change from one trip to another is the order. What is the reason for the trip gets secured before the hotel: the table that justifies the trip and the outings with quotas, like the ones to the Marietas Islands. Then you choose the hotel that fits those dates. Doing it the other way around is how you reach the coast and find out the dinner you wanted has no table.
That is how we build a tailored trip, and it is what the first call is about, which costs nothing. If what you are celebrating is a wedding or an anniversary, celebrations has its own page. And if you already know which part of the coast appeals to you, tell us where to.
